100th Session of Indian Science Congress (100 ISC, 2013) at Kolkata in West Bengal.
President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee called upon scientists to work for development of scientific culture in country. He was inaugurating the 100th Session of Indian Science Congress on January 3, 2013 in presence of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh at Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krinangan/ Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata in West Bengal.
President Pranab Mukherjee,in his inaugural speech, said I would like to call upon the scientific community to work for the promotion of a scientific culture for shaping our future in which prosperity and peace, excellence and equity and oriental values and occidental methods of science converge and co-exist. India is expected to emerge as a major economic power by 2035. We should also emerge as a major knowledge power with high human and societal values.
Dr Manmohan Singh emphasized the importance of rural development and agriculture through S&T interventions. Nearly 65 percent of our people live in rural areas. The increase in their living standards depends greatly on the growth of agricultural production and productivity. Country need new breakthroughs in water-saving technologies of cultivation, enhancement of land productivity and development of climate-resilient varieties. This transformation of agriculture must be the top priority concern of our public policies, including science and technology policies.
The 100th Session of Indian Science Congress concluded on January 7, 2013 with a call to bring forward the youth to work for the promotion of science as the youth leadership is a key to the objective of shaping the future of India. The clarion call was given here in Kolkata by the Governor of West Bengal M.K. Narayanan in the valedictory session.
