17th SAARC summit – Important Points

  • The 17th SAARC summit was held on November 10 and 11, 2011 in Hithadhoo, Addu in South Province of Maldives.
  • The theme of the 17th SAARC summit was “Building Bridges”.
  • The participates of the 17th SAARC Summit (Head of States) were Mohamed Nasheed President of the Maldives,Rajapaksa President of Sri Lanka, Manmohan Singh Prime Minister of India, Yousaf Raza Gillani Prime Minister of Pakistan, Hamid Karzai President of Afghanistan, Sheikh Hasina Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Baburam Bhattarai Prime Minister of Nepal, Jigme Thinley Prime Minister of Bhutan.
  • Mohamed Nasheed was elected as the Chairperson of the 17th SAARC Summit.
  • Mohamed Nasheed highlighted three areas of cooperation in which progress should be made; trade, transport and economic integration; security issues such piracy and climate change; and good governance.
  • SAARC Agreement on Rapid Response to Natural Disasters, SAARC Agreement on Multilateral Arrangement on Recognition of Conformity Assessment, SAARC Agreement on Implementation of Regional Standards SAARC Seed Bank Agreement was adopted in this 17th SAARC Summit.
  • The 20 points Addu declaration was adopted in the 17th SAARC Summit on 11.11.11, in Addu, Maldives.
