President of Gorkha Janiiiukti Morcha (GJM), Bimal Gurung, was elected Chief Executive Officer of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) by the elected and nominated members of the new regional autonomous body in August.

Raghuram Rajan – new chief economic advisor of India.

Raghuram Rajan, a former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has been given go-ahead by the finance minister P Chidambaram to take over as the new chief economic advisor of India. Kaushik Basu held the post earlier, who retired on July 31.

Indian economist Abhijit Banerjee is among the 26 people who have been named by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as member of a high-level panel to advise the world body on the global development agenda beyond 2015, the target date for –the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Hisham Kandil to form government in Egypt. The Egyptian President Mohafnmed Morsi has asked Hisham Kandil, a relatively young water minister, little known outside Egypt, to forma new government.

Vilasrao Deshmukh – Union minister and former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh passes away.

Celebrated fashion photographer Prabuddha Dasgupta passed away recently. Dasgupta’s iconoclastic work with nude portraits broke taboos.

R Vijayaraghavan, a veteran journalist who worked with several newspapers in different parts of the country passed away recently. He was one of the architects of Business Line when The Hindu group started it.

Capt Lakshmi Sehgal Passed Away.

Capt Lakshmi Sehgal, the woman who fought Allied Forces during the Second World War leading the women’s wing of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army, died recently after a prolonged illness. Sehgal had commanded the Rani jhansi Regiment of INA formed by Bose.

Neil Armstrong passed away.

Neil Armstrong (82), who made history on July 20, 1969 as the first person to land on moon, passed away recently. He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft on the mission to moon.

Alfredo Moreno, the foreign minister of Chile, visited India for dialogue with Indian leaders was chosen as the first dialogue partner of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and setting the stage for negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Chile.

Dmitry Rogozin, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, visited India in July to map out the course of the `special and privileged partnership’.

Didier Reynders, the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Didier Reynders, recently visited India.

Merzuki Alie, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, Merzuki Alie visited New Delhi with a delegation of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) to invite India as an observer at the 33rd General Assembly ofAIPA to be held in Lombok, Indonesia in September.

India to Organize Chess Olympiad

All India Chess Federation of the Blind (AICFB) is organizing the 14th Chess Olympiad for the visually impaired. India is the first non-Asian country to host this International Braille Chess Association (IBCA) event in Chennai from August 9, 2012.

VVS Laxman retires from International Cricket.

VVS Laxman bid adieu to international cricket in Hyderabad recently. The 37-year-old Laxman decided to leave the scene ahead of the series opener in his home city. The first Test began on August 23. 

India Wins it’s third U-19 Cricket World Cup

India wins U-19 Cricket World Cup 2012. Skipper Unmukt Chand led from the front with a magnificent hundred as the India under-19 team lifted its third World Cup title after beating defending champion Australia by six wickets in the final at Townsville in Australia. This was the India under-19 , 19 team’s third triumph after Mohammed Kaif and Virat Kohli led their respective teams to victory in the 2000 and 2008 editions respectively.

Michael Phelps – The Most decorated Olympian of all time

Four years after he climbed to the top of Olympic achievement, Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympian of all times when he won a record 19th Olympic medal at the London Games.

Vijay Kumar conferred Himachal Gaurav award. London Olympics silver medallist shooter Vijay Kumar was conferred the ‘Himachal Gaurav Samman’ and also a cash prize of Rs. one crore by the state ‘government.

Ashoke Sen wins Yuri Milner Prize.

Ashoke Sen, a physicist and a string theorist at Allahabad’s Harish Chandra Research Institute, has become one of the nine winners of the first Yuri Milner Fundamental Physics Prize — at $3 million (Rs. 16.7 crore), the most lucrative academic prize in the world.

Shalini Singh won Prem Bhatia award for excellence in environmental reports on mining in Goa, protest against the Posco project in Odisha and child football makers of Meerut.

Kulandei Francis won Magsaysay award. An Indian grassroots activist whose pioneering community initiatives in Tamil Nadu empowered thousands of rural women to form micro enterprises and break the poverty spiral, is among this year’s six winners of the prestigious Magsaysay award.

Miss China wins Miss World 2012.
Miss China Wenxia Yu won the title of Miss World 2012 while Miss Wales Sophie Elizabeth Moulds and Miss Australia Jessica Michelle Kahawaty came second and third respectively.

Mamta Kalia gets Sita puraskar. Renowned Hindi writer Mamta Kalia has been chosen for “Sita Puraskar” by the Lok Sabha Speaker Meera Kumar. The award is given in memory of noted educationist and writer Sita Srivastava.

Shiv Bhatia gets Rashtriya Ekta Puraskar. Bhatia was honoured for his contribution towards society and outstanding service and achievements.

National Sports Award 2012

India test-fires Agni-II missile from Wheeler Island. India successfully test-fired its medium range nuclear capable Agni-II missile with a strike range of 2,000 km as part of a user trial by the Army from the Wheeler Island off Odisha coast.

Hamid Ansari re-elected vice-president of India for the second successive term. Ansari became the second person to get a second consecutive term as he defeated NDA nominee Jaswant Singh by a large margin of 252 votes.

P. Chidambaram become the new Finance Minister and Sushilkumar Shinde replaced Chidambaram as new Home Minister.

Russia joins WTO after 18 years of talks. After 18 years of negotiation, Russia, on August 22, entered the World Trade Organization (WTO), which restricts import duties and subsidies in an attempt to create a level-playing field for international trade.
