Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti resigned ahead of Elections

69-year-old Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti, an economist and former European commissioner, on 21 December 2012 resigned after 13 months in office with handing over his resignation to President Giorgio Napolitano after parliament gave final approval to the 2013 budget law.

With the resignation of Mario Monti the President is expected to call early national elections within 70 days of the parliament dissolution, possibly at the end of February 2013.
