Pranab Mukherjee elected as 13th President of India

Pranab Mukherjee became the 13th President of India, he was elected on 22 July 2012, and sworn-in on 25 July 2012. Chief Justice of India Sarosh Homi Kapadia administered the oath of the President at an impressive ceremony in the historic Central Hall of Parliament.

He is also the first Bengali to be elected as the president. He took over the position from Pratibha Patil,the first woman to serve in the office, whose term ends on July 24, 2012. Earlier this month, he resigned from the post of finance minister to contest the presidential poll.

Arun Mishra is the new DGCA of India. The government has cleared the name of Arun Mishra for the post of Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). He will replace EK Bharat Bhushan.

Rajesh Khanna passed away in Mumbai on July 18, 2012. He was a Bollywood actor, film producer and politician. He was referred to as the “first superstar”and the “original superstar” of Indian cinema.He earned these titles following 15 consecutive solo hit films in the 1970s, a record that remains unbroken.

Dara Singh passed away in Mumbai. Legendary wrestler and actor Dara Singh passed away at his Mumbai home. He was 83.

Anto Peter, one of the strong proponents of Tamil computing and a technical writer who created many Tamil fonts, died in Chennai.

Hiren Bhattacharyya passed away. A popular and celebrated Assamese poet and winner of the Sahitya Akademy Award and several honours, Hiren Bliattacharyya passed away recently.

Radha Vinod Raju, the founding Director-General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and key member of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which probed Rajiv Gandhi assassination, died. He was 62.

Barclays Chairman Marcus Agius has resigned following the bank being slapped with 290 million pounds ($451 million) fine by the US and the UK authorities to settle the charges of manipulating global benchmark lending rates.

Tamil Nadu hosts National Aquatics championship. Over 1,000 swimmers from various states were seen in action in the Junior National Aquatics Championship hosted by the Tamil Nadu State Aquatic Association at the Velachery Pool from July 11 to 15.

Golden Peacock Award presented. Former Chief Justice of India PN Bhagwati gave away the National Golden Peacock Awards for Eco-Innovation, Environment Management and Occupational Health and Safety at the 14th World Congress on Environment Management. The meet was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and the theme this year was “Driving sustainable business through green economy”.

Indian environmental philosopher and activist Vandana Shiva has been chosen for this years Fukuoka Prize, a prestigious award being bestowed by Fukuoka city government in Japan on people who, contribute to academia arts, and culture in Asia.

Scientists found ‘God particle’

Sunita Williams’ Second Space Journey

Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams, along with her two colleagues, took off her second space journey on a Russian Soyuz rocket, which blasted off successfully from Kazakhstan on July 15.

Reserve Bank of India Slashes SLR to 23 percent. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), on July 31, kept the key policy rates (CRR and Repo Rates) unchanged but slashes the Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) by one percent from 24 percent to 23 percent.
