Justice Altamas Kabir on Friday took over as the 39th and the current Chief Justice of India. President Pranab Mukherjee administered the oath of Justice Altamas Kabir in Rashtrapati Bhavan at 11.30 AM, in a glittering attended by among others Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
Justice Kabir described former Chief Justice of India Kapadia as a man full of wisdom, self-imposed discipline and loved by many people as he stood by what he decided and is a true replica of Abraham Lincoln.
Justice Altamas Kabir born on July 19, 1948 in Kolkata, did his M.A. and LL.B. from University of Calcutta. He was enrolled at the Bar on August 1, 1973 and was made a permanent judge of Calcutta high court on August 6, 1990.
Justice Kabir assumed the office of acting Chief Justice of Calcutta high court on January 11, 2005. He was elevated as Chief Justice of Jharkhand high court on March 1, 2005 and was made a judge of the Supreme Court of India on September 9, 2005.
Justice Altamas Kabir will continue as Chief Justice of India (CJI) till July 19, 2013.
