West Bengal gives second-language status to Urdu

The government of West Bengal has decided to give Urdu the second-language status in those areas having 10 per cent Urdu-speaking population in the state. This is for the first time in the state that Urdu language has been given official recognition as second language.

Initially, 10 areas, including Kolkata, Asansol, Jamuria Champdani, Goaltore I and II blocks, Islampur,Titagrh and Kamarhati, had been identified as having 10 percent Urdu-speaking population.
