Salary of Bank clerk in India (Public Sector Banks) or Pay Scale of Bank Clerk:
The salary of clerks in most of the Public Sector Banks (PSB) and some private sector banks (those who are agreeing the bipartite settlement of banks) is same and last revision in salary structure has taken place w.e.f November 1, 2007.
Almost all public sector banks place the clerks in the following scale at the 1st stage of the grade :-
Rs. 7200 – (400×3) – 8400 – (500×3) – 9900 – (600×4) – 12300 – (700×7) – 17200 – (1300×1) – 18500 – (800×1) – 19300
The initial Basic Pay of a clerk will be Rs.7200/- . The figures in the brackets indicate the annual increment and the number of stages for which the same is applicable.
Other major allowances payable on monthly basis as part of the Bank Clerk’s salary:
In addition to Basic Pay, clerks in banks are eligible for the following allowances :-
(a) Dearness Allowance (DA) : DA in banks is revised on quarterly basis (i.e. in the months of February, May, August and November) based on the CPI as declared by Government of India. The current DA (for the month of May, 2013 is 84.15% of the Basic Pay). DA can go up with higher inflation and also come down if the inflation rate is in negative.
(b) House Rent Allowance (HRA) : This depends on the place of posting and it can be either 10% or 9% or 7.5% and 7% depending on the place of posting.
Total salary or emoluments of a newly recruited clerk in bank:
The above indicates that the total salary of a clerk on joining at a metro station will be around Rs.13,900/. However, the total salary of a clerk who has to join in rural area will be about Rs.13,000/-. In addition to this, you can also be paid certain allowances which are specific to the job you have been allocated viz. Cashier or CTO (approximately Rs.1000/-)

Update: It is to be noted that the 10th Bipartite Settlement is due for Bank Staffs/ Officers since November, 2012. After this settlement, it is expected that the salary at entry level in clerical cadre will be above Rs. 20,000.
